Opinions on spraying orchids are divided. Some growers spray daily, others once a week, and still others do not spray at all. In nature, orchids occur in areas with high air humidity.
When grown in an apartment, they feel best near other plants, which creates a suitable microclimate and increases air humidity, which is often too low on hot days or during the heating season. During such a period, I recommend spraying orchids every few days, taking particular care of the growth cone, which should not get water inside. When the nights become cool and water evaporates more slowly, it is recommended to spray in the morning hours. If the sprayed plant does not have time to dry by evening, mold and fungal infections may develop. The same applies to watering.
People often ask, what should I spray with? There are various spray mists available on the market that gloss the leaves and keep them in better condition. However, reaching for such agents is not necessary, water is enough for sprinkling, but properly prepared and soft. It is best to use rainwater or distilled water for this purpose. As in the case of watering, avoid hard water because it has an adverse effect on the plant and leaves scale deposits on the surface of the leaves. The air humidity around the plant can be increased by placing trays filled with water nearby.
It is also recommended to place orchids directly on such trays, but in such a way that the pot does not come into contact with the water, e.g. on saucers turned upside down. Remember also not to keep orchids near or above radiators. By following these rules, we will be able to enjoy healthy orchids all year round.
